Jennifer Lopez has got her executive producer hat on with her new drama pilot, The Fosters getting picked up by ABC Family. Benny Medina, a Lopez associate also Executive Produces. The one-hour drama was created by Bradley Bredeweg and Peter Paige (Queer As Folk), who will also serve as writers and executive producers. The series is produced by Nuyorican Productions, Inc., and Prodco, Inc.
The Fosters is drama about a multi-ethnic family of foster and biological kids being raised by two mothers. The cast includes Meet the Parents‘ Teri Polo along with Cierra Ramirez, Sherri Saum, Jake T. Austin, Hayden Byerly, David Lambert, Maia Mitchell, and Danny Nucci.
Lopez’s production company has enjoyed a successful run with the reality show South Beach Tow. ABC Family also ordered series from Twisted (formerly titled Socio). For awhile there, Twisted looked like it might be passed after the Newtown tragedy in December. But ABC Family brass opted to push forward. The drama is about a charismatic 16 year old (Avan Jogia), with a troubled past who recently reconnected with his two female best friends from childhood. He becomes the prime suspect when a fellow student is surprisingly found dead in her home.
“These new shows will bring the same depth, heart, close relationships and authenticity that our viewers have come to expect and will pair nicely with our already established pop culture hits,” ABC Family president Michael Riley said.
The Fosters got a boost, with Joanna Johnson (Make It Or Break It) recruited as executive producer/showrunner last month in anticipation of a pickup. The series orders come on the heels of successful winter premieres of ABC Family’s returning dramas Switched at Birth, Bunheads, Pretty Little Liars and The Lying Game last month.
