CNN Latino Shut Down After Only 1 Year

CNN Latino is shut down by parent company just a little over a year after it was launched with much fanfare. The official network statement  statement stated:  “CNN Latino was a bold effort to continue CNN’s commitment to the U.S. Hispanic marketplace. Unfortunately, despite the great efforts of many talented people, CNN Latino was not able to fulfill our business expectations and we are discontinuing the programming this month.”  CNN Latino’s strategy to produce local programming that is relatable to U.S. Latinos began in Los Angeles when KTLA’s Elizabeth Espinoza premiered as host of Sin Limites which aired on KBEH-DT 63.  From there other CNN Latino branded stations in opened in Miami, Orlando, New York, Phoenix and Tampa.  While CNN Latino Tampa’s Buenos Dias Latinos has said they will continue to produce their show independently, it does not appear the others will do the same.  When reached for comment, Sin Limites’ Espinoza, when asked if there were any plans to continue, responded by speaking to her viewers directly, “THANK YOU to our loyal viewers and want remind you, nuestra gente bella Latina, to stay well informed…because true power comes from knowledge!”

Michael_PeñaMichael Pena In Talks for Triple Nine

Michael Peña is in talks to join the cast of director John Hillcoat’s heist thriller Triple Nine, which begins shooting this summer.  A story about a group of gang members and a corrupt cop plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull of their biggest heist yet across town.  Already attached to the project are 12 Years A Slave‘s Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Out of the Furnace’s Casey Affleck and Kate Winslet. Other rumored cast includes Fruitvale Station’s Michael B. Jordan; Breaking Bad and Need For Speed‘s Aaron Paul; Warm Bodies’ Teresa Palmer, Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman in Batman Vs. Superman).  Hillcoat wrote the script along with Matt Cook.

Jorge.Diaz.dapperJorge Diaz Joins cast of Miner 33

Jorge Diaz star continues to rise.  Diaz joins the cast of The 33 based on the real life story of the 33 miners that were trapped underground for 69 days in 2010.  Diaz will play 24-year-old engineer Igor Proestakis, who was responsible for coming up with the solution that helped rescue the miners.

The 33 is directed my Patricia Riggen (Under the Same Moon).  Diaz joins a terrific cast that includes Antonio Banderas, Rodrigo Santoro, Juliette Binoche and Gabriel Byrne.  Diaz is repped by Amy Abell-Rosenfield of the Glick Agency

RosiePerezRosie Perez Cast in  An American Education Pilot

Rosie Perez is cast in the single camera comedy pilot Bad Education based on the BBC series. Perez will play a tough-as-nails high school principal opposite Jack Whitehall’s character who is a British transplant, a teacher who has an unorthodox way of teaching.

Perez starred in The Counselor last year and has two films in postproduction:  The Hero of Color City and The Being Experience.  Perez is repped by Jane Berliner at Authentic Talent and Literary Management.

Salma Hayek to Star in The Septembers of Shiraz

salma-hayekSalma Hayek is attached to star in the Dalia Sofer novel adaptation The Septembers of Shiraz for Millennium Films with Gerard Butler on as one of the producers.

Based on real events, the story revolves around a Jewish family caught in the Islamic revolution in 1981 in Iran.  There is the father, an imprisoned gem dealer, his wife and a daughter and their son who lives in New York and how they try to escape the deadly tyranny in Iran to once again be re-united.  Hayek will play the mother.  Hayek is repped by CAA.
