Jorge Gutierrez Tapped to Develop ‘The Billion Brick Race’

Los Angeles, CA-  The Book of Life director Jorge Gutierrez has been tapped to develop the Billion Brick Race, a new Lego movie poduced by Dan Lin, Phil Lord, Chris Miller and Roy Lee.

Although the new Warner Bros. animation project has not been greenlit, it was originally in the hands of Jason Segel and Drew Pearce, who came up with the idea.

Chris McKay and Jill Wilfert of Lego are executive producing.

Gutierrez’ animated comedy  The Book of Life grossed $100 million worldwide and also received a Golden Globe nomination for best animated feature in 2015.

In 2007, Gutierrez and his wife, Sandra Equihua, created El Tigre: The Adventures of Manny Rivera for Nickelodeon. The comedy, which centers on the Mexican 13-year-old superheroe, won five Daytime Emmys.

Just recently, Google Spotlight Stories offered a preview of Gutierrez’s first virtual reality/360 short, titled Son of Jaguar, at CG conference Siggraph.

This emotional story also occurs in Mexico and is set in the Mexican wrestling world. It follows a family man and the son of famous wrestler Jaguar, who is going into the ring against Lord Calavera (Lord Skull) despite having lost a leg in a prior match. A release date hasn’t yet been announced.

“Mexican wrestling is very much a tradition passed down from generation to generation, and there’s a legacy to live up to,” Gutierrez said.
