Cuban Born Anabelle Acosta in “Fat Camp” is One to Watch

Cuban-American actress Anabelle Acosta stars in the upcoming film Fat Camp which recently aired on BET and will be available on VOD beginning on July 25th.  She also recently co-starred in the hit TV shows Quantico and Ballers.

Born in Havana, Cuba and raised in New York City, Acosta is a Juilliard trained actress who began her early years modeling and acting in Manhattan, eventually landing small roles in Supernatural and Castle.

In 2015, Acosta landed her breakout role in HBO’s Ballers alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson followed by her role opposite Priyanka Chopra on ABC’s Quantico as the driven, goal-oriented Nathalie Vasquez. Always proud of her Hispanic background, Acosta recently went back to her roots in the multi-generational romantic comedy Lost and Found En Cuba, directed by Regina Don with Adrian Barraza and Liz Torres as her mother and grandmother respectively.

Acosta stars in the upcoming comedy, Fat Camp, where she stars opposite up-and-coming comedian Chris Redd. As Abby, the strong-willed female counselor who helps Hutch (Chris Redd) be honest with himself and accept his past, Acosta brings a comedic blend of heart and drama to the role. This irreverent comedy brings the laughs and the heart, reminding us all to embrace our inner loser as the ultimate winner.

Twenty-something Hutch thinks image is everything. He fronts like a baller and is too spoiled to get a job. But when his mom kicks him out of the house and he’s forced to work at his uncle’s fat camp, he finds himself supervising an offbeat group of husky boys, who ultimately help him grow up.

Chuck Hayward’s (Netflix’s new series Dear White People) irreverent script is all about embracing your inner loser as the ultimate winner, making Emmy- nominated Jennifer Arnold’s fiction feature directorial debut a willfully offensive adult comedy with no manners and tons of heart.

Acclaimed comic and actor Chris Redd (Pop Star: Never Stop Never Stopping, Netflix’s Disjointed) gives a star turn as Hutch, with Acosta (Quantico, Ballers), newcomer Michael Cienfuegos, Mel Rodriguez (Last Man On Earth, Getting On), and Vivica A. Fox (Empire, Kill Bill: Volumes 1 and 2).

Fat Camp is directed by Jennifer Arnold and is written by Chuck Hayward based on a story by Shane Dawson and Hayward. The film is produced by Tatiana Kelly, Jim Young, William B. Macomber, and Eleanor Nett. Valerie Stadler, Peter E. Blacker, and Shane Dawson are executive producers. Cinematography is by Patti Lee with editing by Brad Wilhite. Music by Siddhartha Khosla.

Fat Camp is a Fluency Productions, a division of NBCUniversal Telemundo Enterprises. Aimed at the emerging majority, Fluency is committed to celebrating new heroes and amplifying bold voices.
Fat Camp premiered on BET July 17 and on VOD July 25.
